Side effects of teeth whitening are minimal or none if whitening process is followed as directed. Whitening has no disadvantages since it does not alter teeth structure in any way - it only removes stains from teeth surface or under it. These are some of problems you might experience after teeth whitening treatment:

- Increased teeth sensitivity to higher and lower temperatures of food and drink, pressure or touch. This increased sensitivity is result of using peroxide. This will decrease and eventually disappear several days after the treatment.
- Gums can also become more sensitive but this also disappears in a few days.
- Sometimes, but rarely, a tooth may begin to hurt after the treatment. This happens if peroxide reaches the tooth nerve. This will also disappear in few days.
- Tooth molds worn at night can cause gum irritation. The irritation will disappear after a few days of not wearing the mold.
- If you're using "At-Home Whitening Kits" you might experience gum irritation if teeth tray with whitening gel does not fit your teeth perfectly and gel reach your gums. Because of this "Custom At-Home Whitening Kits" are much better solution because dentist will make teeth tray perfectly fits your teeth so whitening gel can't reach gums and cause irritations.
- Sometimes you can experience spontaneous shooting pains down the middle of front teeth.
- "Technicolor teeth": Since restorations such as bonding, dental crowns or porcelain veneers are not affected by teeth whitening process they maintain their default color while other parts of teeth get whitened.
